Artist Statement

My work begins with moments when the world changes its face – fog drifting through ridges, candlelight dimming edges, the sudden hush of dusk. Shapes dissolve, colors intensify, and the scene turns half-real, half-imagined. In the studio, I carry these impressions into layered paint, textured surfaces, and contrasts that hold both clarity and mystery. My aim is not to recreate a view, but to capture the sensation of being there – that in-between moment when nature feels both vivid and dreamlike.

Bio

Bob Belt grew up roaming woods and fields in Illinois, later moving to California where the ocean and mountains deepened his connection to nature. He studied Fine Arts at the University of Illinois at Chicago and has spent decades exploring how fleeting moments outdoors can become painting. A lifelong hiker, he draws inspiration from ridges softened by fog, candlelit evenings, and forests dissolving into shadow. His paintings transform these impressions into layered works that invite viewers to see differently.
